Beerschot squanders valuable points in the dying seconds Match - report 23 Feb Despite their numerical superiority, the Mannekes could only manage a 1-1 draw against RWDM Brussels yesterday.

Just before kick-off, Messoudi had to make some changes to his starting eleven. Bas Van den Eynden was not 100% fit and was replaced by Andres Labie. In a rain-soaked Olympic Stadium, combining on the heavy pitch was anything but easy. It was therefore important to make the most of every opportunity — and Van La Parra understood that well. Claes headed Masui's cross towards goalkeeper Lathouwers, who couldn't get a grip on the wet ball. Van La Parra pushed the rebound past the goalkeeper after just four minutes: Beerschot took an early lead.

Around the half-hour mark, the Brussels team made things even more difficult for themselves. Chaib was sent off before half-time after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Beerschot to play against ten men for more than an hour. We went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

After the break, Beerschot went in search of a comfortable second goal. Vula, Masui and Van La Parra tried, but without success. Messoudi decided to bring in some new attacking impetus and brought on Magidigidi for Vula. He too soon had a good chance, but without success.

Ten minutes before the end, the match seemed to be decided. Plat headed in the 2-0 from a Haraguchi corner. The referee initially approved the goal, but after consulting with his assistant, he made the remarkable decision that there had been obstruction of the goalkeeper. Wright-Phillips, a few metres away from Lathouwers, was deemed to have obstructed him by the refereeing trio. So it remained 1-0 and Beerschot had to hope that the ball would not fall well for RWDM.

In the extra time, Beerschot was dealt a final blow. Labie, who had just suffered from cramps, wanted to clear the ball but ended up beating his own goalkeeper. Beerschot thus surrendered the victory in the final minutes. As a result, Beerschot sees Lommel SK draw level and KV Kortrijk possibly extend their lead.
