The derby started just as expected: fiery and intense. Beerschot took the initiative and looked to break down the Lierse defence. Van la Parra already tested goalkeeper De Smet within two minutes, but the shot was comfortably saved. At the other end, Shinton had little to do in the first half.
Four minutes before the break, the ball once again fell to Van la Parra, and this time he made no mistake. With a superb strike, he put the Mannekes ahead: 1-0. It was his first goal for Beerschot and one with special meaning. Just three days earlier, Van la Parra had lost his uncle, and in an emotional moment he dedicated the goal to him. Beerschot went into the break with a deserved lead at the Olympic Stadium.
After the interval, Beerschot looked somewhat nervous, and the Pallieters tried to take control of the match. Pressure on Shinton’s goal grew, and Gboua had a golden opportunity to equalise inside the box, but he blasted the ball high over. Lierse’s main threat afterwards came from set pieces, but Beerschot’s defence stood strong. With this result, Beerschot recorded their first home victory of the season and can look back with satisfaction on the opening four league matches.
