What a night at the Olympisch Stadion! After a mediocre first half and a bitter blow just before the break, our Mannekes unleashed an unstoppable storm in the second half. With a hat-trick from top scorer Arnold Vula and goals from Anas Haj Mohamed and Dennis Gyamfi, Beerschot turned a 0-1 deficit into a resounding 5-1 victory.
First half: Plenty of possession, but a sucker punch.
Coach Mo Messoudi kept faith in the starting eleven that secured all three points in the previous league match against Hasselt. From the opening whistle by referee Vitse, our Mannekes took control of possession. Liège were pushed deep into their own half, creating several opportunities for Haraguchi, Van Eenoo and Vula, among others.
Despite the pressure from the Kiel side, the breakthrough failed to materialise due to a lack of precision with the final pass. Just as everyone was preparing for a goalless half-time score, disaster struck. In the 41st minute, the Beerschot defence misjudged a long ball. Harry Ondo-Eyi needed no invitation and unleashed a devastating strike to make it 0-1. A bitter blow for our boys just before the break.
Six minutes of madness and an unstoppable Vula.
Mo Messoudi made a change at half-time, bringing Toshio Lake on for Mats Rits. It proved to be a masterstroke, as Beerschot came flying out of the blocks.
In the 57th minute, Genki Haraguchi delivered a perfectly placed free kick onto the head of Anas Haj Mohamed, who powered home a superb header to make it 1-1. The momentum had shifted! Just two minutes later, the turnaround was complete: substitute Lake delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the box, where Arnold Vula cleverly redirected the ball past goalkeeper Ravet to make it 2-1.
The absolute highlight of the evening followed in the 63rd minute. Vula unleashed a thunderous strike, sending the ball flying into the top corner in a phenomenal world-class goal (3-1)! Three goals in just six minutes: 't Kiel erupted with joy!
The goal fest shows no mercy.
Beerschot remained hungry and continued to tear apart the Liège defence. A header from Van den Eynden following a corner was strangely ruled out after a video review, but that did nothing to stop the purple-and-white storm.
In the 81st minute, Van Eenoo once again delivered a pinpoint corner onto the head of Arnold Vula, who powered home with a thumping header to complete his perfect hat-trick (4-1). Haraguchi and Claes hit the crossbar and the post shortly before full-time, but the final word belonged to substitute Dennis Gyamfi. Having been on the pitch for barely a few moments, he beat goalkeeper Ravet for the fifth time to seal the 5-1 victory!
On to the Belgian Cup!
With a fantastic team performance and a goal-filled second-half spectacle, our Mannekes have given themselves a huge confidence boost. Attention now turns to next Sunday, when Beerschot host RSC Anderlecht at the Olympisch Stadion in the Croky Cup.
