Welcome, William PoppMen10 FebBeerschot has signed an additional goalkeeper. The 31-year-old Japanese player William Popp will provide the necessary competition between the posts. Popp will join on loan until the end of this season. Beerschot has negotiated an option to extend the collaboration by one year, as well as a purchase option. For the Japanese goalkeeper, this is his first adventure outside his home country. He joins from Shonan Bellmare, a club that played in the top Japanese football league until last season.
William Popp brings a wealth of experience with him and is particularly looking forward to this new step in his career. ‘It's fantastic to still have the opportunity to play football in Europe at this age, and at such a fantastic club as Beerschot. I know that the club can count on a very fanatical fan base and that motivates me enormously to take on this challenge,’ said the Japanese goalkeeper.
Sporting Director Murat Akin explains the transfer: ‘After Emile Doucouré's departure, we were still looking for an additional goalkeeper to provide competition. With William, we are bringing in an experienced keeper who has already proven his worth in his home country. We are convinced that he will be an asset to the club.’
