It turned out to be an absolute thriller in Seraing last weekend. By the 87th minute, nobody believed Beerschot could still win, right Bas? “I’d be lying if I said I was certain we could turn it around,” he says. “But personally, I still believed we could do something. The coaches had prepared us for a tough match, and we knew there was a chance we wouldn’t get many opportunities. We switched to plan B, with me moving up front. In the end, it’s fantastic how it turned out. There’s always some tension in a first league match – you could see that in our play. But we immediately showed that we’re resilient and flexible enough to adapt our system,” Bas begins.
For the 23-year-old Belgian, born in Lille, it was a dream debut: scoring in his first official match for Beerschot. Yet someone else also stood out. Ensar Brahic made his professional debut and immediately scored the winning goal.
“Really fantastic for him,” says Bas. “Coming off the bench isn’t always easy, but all the substitutes played an important role last week. It shows we need everyone.”
Eupen won their opening match against RFC Liège. They were solid at the back and clinical in front of goal. It seems the team from the East Cantons is ready for the clash at the Kiel. “There’s no underestimating them, absolutely not. Last week, we may have expected an easier game at Seraing too, but that turned out to be very tough. The coach has warned us enough during pre-season that strange results can happen in this league. It’s up to us to make sure the three points stay at home tomorrow,” Bas continues.
Tomorrow will also be Bas’s first official home game at the Kiel, and thus his first real encounter with the fans.
“During the friendly against Venezia, I already felt how passionate the supporters are here. That support will definitely give us an extra boost tomorrow. Together, we’re going all in for six out of six.” Whether he’ll play as the main striker again, he keeps open: “(laughs) I won’t give that away just yet – hopefully I’ll be a bit deeper on the pitch,” he concludes.
