A GOLDEN THREEPOINTER

Beerschot – Jong Genk: 1-0

A goal from Marco Weymans on the stroke of half time proved to be enough to clinch a very important home win. Not just important but deserved too as Beerschot controlled the game throughout but forgot to score more. Jong Genk goalkeeper Penders denied our Mannekes on several occasions. The visitors thought they had scored an equaliser in injury time but the linesman ruled that goal out for offside.

It took a while until Beerschot got well in the game. Jong Genk threatened a couple of times in the early stages of the game but Matijas and the goalpost saved us. On the half hour Alhassan headed wide and Reyners saw his header saved by Penders. Beerschot were in control now and when Reyner sent Verlinden through the visiting goalie was again at hand. Minutes later Penders eventually was beaten when Sanusi tried his luck from the edge of the box but his drive came off the post. No luck there.

On the stroke of half time it was Marco Weymans who broke the deadlock with an unstoppable volley from a Verlinden cross. Great goal and a massive celebration in front of our die hard fans in Block I.

Beerschot remained the better and more dangerous team after the break. With opportunities for Reyners and - again - Weymans, who saw his shot blocked by Penders, who played a blinder. The home win looked well and truly in the bag but we had a big scare in the 95th minute when Jong Genk scored from a free kick... but the linesman's offside flag saved our embarrasment. The three points remained in the Olympic Stadium.
