BACK IN TIME: ZULTE WAREGEM – BEERSCHOT, SEASON 2005-2006

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear…

Today: Zulte Waregem – Beerschot 2-1, season 2005-2006

THREE RED CARDS AND A DEFEAT ON TOP IN INJURY TIME

One of the most eventful and frustrating matches between Zulte Waregem and Beerschot was the confrontation on a chilly night fifteen years ago. We take you back to September 2005 for this one.

FA Cup holders Beerschot were preparing for the return leg of their European Cup encounter with Olympique Marseille at the time and still looking for their best form. That didn’t come in the Regenboog Stadium either.  The five thousand crowd watched a poor game of football and Beerschot’s performance lacked ideas and inspiration, so when Camara, who had come on for the injured Tosin Dosunmu, scored the opening goal after the first decent combination, it came as a big surprise.

Both teams were unable to lift the game… until the last couple of minutes. Suddenly it all exploded. First Beerschot defender Igor Lolo was sent off and then Waregem sub Matthys curled a free kick in the top corner for an equaliser. Disappointment and frustration grew by the minute; everyone in purple and white lost their marbles. Goalkeeper Luciano hit a Waregem striker and got his marching orders as well, soon followed by Dickson who had kicked his opponent and insulted the ref. Only eight Beerschot players remained for the last couple of seconds and five minutes of injury time. As coach Jos Daerden had already used up his three substitutions, defender Edwin Ouon took over Luciano’s goalkeeper jersey. Holding on to that 1-1 draw was the main and only priority.

In added on time it turned very sour. Beerschot started to panic, lost their concentration and organisation… and conceded a second goal. It was Salou who headed in at the far post to give Zulte Waregem an unexpected 2-1 home win. What an anticlimax!

Referee Burie needed police protection to get out of the stadium in one piece after the game and the atmosphere in the traveling supporters’ stand of the Regenboog Stadium boiled over a couple of times. What a “good old days” away game that proved to be. But Beerschot had to return home with no points in the bag.
