BACK IN TIME: OHL - BEERSCHOT 2019-2020

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear…Today: Oud-Heverlee Leuven - Beerschot 0-3, season 2019-2020

THE START OF THAT INCREDIBLE SECOND PERIOD TOWARDS PROMOTION

The most memorable match between OH Leuven and Beerschot is without any doubt the second leg of the promotion final in August last year where a 4-1 win opened the door towards Division 1A. However, for today’s flashback we take you back 10 months earlier, to the game in which Beerschot laid the foundation of that great run in the second period… which eventually led to promotion. Yet another game to frame.

Hernan Losada had only just taken over from Stijn Vreven as Beerschot’s head coach and was still in the process of modeling his squad into an unbeatable footballing machine. The week before Beerschot had lost 1-0 in Lommel after a poor team performance. Question marks and doubts popped up… but were swept aside almost immediately. Because that game in Leuven proved to be the starting point of Beerschot resurrection.

Tactically it was safety first, with a 5-3-2-formation and strong defensive work. In midfield Rapha Holzhauser starred as Man of the Match, making and scoring goals. Our Austrian playmaker scored the first an reached Noubissi from a well taken corner for number two. Minutes later Jorn Van Camp netted our third for Leuven’s final knockdown. The first period champions were beaten handsomely and squarely.

How it all eventually finished is still fresh in everyone’s mind: Beerschot were crowned second period champions after an away win at Lokeren, then won the first leg of the promotion final against OHL at home with 1-0, as well as the second leg after that corona-break with an impressive 4-1 scoreline. The gates to Division 1A were now unlocked, with the key Beerschot picked up during that beautiful Friday night in November. Oh, sweet memories…
