REPORT: KAA Gent - Beerschot

AA GENT 5 – 1 BEERSCHOT

It turned out to be a frustrating and painful afternoon for Beerschot in the Ghelamco Arena. Our boys didn’t live up to expectations, played without inspiration, and could barely stand up to a much keener AA Ghent. They were particularly poor in the first half. In this half the home team laid the foundations for a comfortable victory. After half time things did go a little better for a short while, but an honour-saving goal didn’t seem on the cards. Quite the reverse, in the closing phase the Buffalos secured a resounding victory. So it was an off-day in all possible respects for the Losada boys. The 5-1 from Coulibaly was no consolation.

Just like last week in the home match against Waasland Beveren, our boys were already 2-0 down in Ghent after a quarter of an hour. There were two goals after poor marking and a lack decisiveness in the defence. The goals were given away much too easily, with Yaremchuk each time providing the finish. The first chance was for Beerschot, a precision move by Holzhauser but Suzuki missed the ball.

Beerschot was clearly down, was looking for confidence, coherence and openings but saw a faster and more joined up AA Ghent take full control of the game. Every time the Buffalos launched their penetrating attacks the alarm bells sounded at the back. And not without reason. Just before the half hour Depoitre put number three behind Vanhamel, and it was already just about game over.

Beerschot came back twice in the first half, first through Tissoudali who cut in from the left flank but shot against Bolat’s legs. Then Suzuki blasted a shot against the crossbar. It gave the Kiel boy a little more faith just before the break. But …

With Brogno as the extra attacker there was now more punch in Beerschot’s attack. Suzuki received the ball perfectly from Holzhauser but waited too long. A lost chance at 3-1. Ten minutes later there was a real blow. Our defence had no answer to a whirlwind Ghent move down the left flank with Depoitre finishing in the top of the net. A nice goal.

The story was over for Beerschot when in the closing phase substitute Samoise also chipped in with a goal. Debut player Coulibaly also scored in the closing phase. But this was a goal only relevant to statistics…

After a strong start to the season, today’s match was a serious blow. The coming weekend with no fixtures seems to come at the perfect time for our boys. The ideal opportunity to charge the batteries again. On with the next match.
