HEAVY HOME DEFEAT AGAINST STRONG NEWCOMERS

BEERSCHOT - UNION  0 - 3

It was a Saturday night to forget as soon as possible for Beerschot who suffered a second consecutive home defeat and were unable to build on that strong second half performance from last Sunday in Gent. Peter Maes' team was outplayed, outclassed and eventually heavily punished by newcomers Union. A three-nil defeat was the logical outcome of this poor and disappointing game of football.

It were the visitors who set the pace and created most of the danger with their striker Undav in a starring role. He pounced after a  misunderstanding in the Beerschot defense and put the ball in the net for a deserved Union lead. Our Mannekes were second best all over the place, were overpowered in midfield and only threatened with a header from Frans on top the net and a 'nearly shot' from Holzhauser.

Coach Peter Maes sent on Marius Noubissi during the break and he came close after a blocked shot from Coulibaly but finally saw Union goakeeper Moris palm away the ball. Beerschot paid the toll for this miss as Union settled the game in the next five minutes with goals from Undav (again!) and Lapoussin who both acted swiftly after two monumental blunders in the Beerschot defense. 0-3 the scoreline, Union looked as if they had the three points in the bag.

Heavy rain and lightning then upheld the match as referee Boterberg sent the players to the dressing room. A wise decision as the weather conditions were life threatening. A bit of a 'deja vu' experience that was as the same thing happerned in Beerschot's previous home game against Cercle Brugge.

Play was resumed after ten minutes but Beerschot's hopes to claw their way back into the game were soon denied as Union continued to push and be the more dangerous and better team on the night. They came close to a fourth goal but De Smet cleared twice on the line and the referee disallowed a goal for offside. Beerschot tried and tried, threatened with a header from Frans that went over the top... but finished the game with not one shot on target.
